Date Nut Bread

  • 1 pound walnuts chopped
  • 1 pound dates pitted and chopped
  • 3 1/2 cups water
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 cups flour


  • Preheat over to 300
  • Boil the water
  • In a bowl mix the walnuts, dates, salt and baking soda
  • Pour the water over the baking soda, walnut and date mixture
  • In a different bow, beat together the eggs and sugar
  • Add two cups of flour to the eggs and sugar
  • Add the water-date-walnut mixture to the eggs-sugar-flour mix
  • Add remaining flour, until all the ingredients are mixed together
  • Grease several loaf pans (or coffee cans)
  • Pour mix into the pans (if using cans, only fill 2/3 of the way)
  • Bake for 1 – 1 1/2 hours or until a toothpick inserted into the date nut bread come out clean


Serve with cream cheese
